Schedule A Disability Hiring Authority
Through Schedule A, eligible individuals with disability status can apply for and be appointed to positions in Federal agencies without competition. If you are a disabled individual looking to seek employment with a Federal agency, here are some things to consider if you are looking to invoke Schedule A
Who is eligible?
Individuals who have received Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits; required services through the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA); received services in elementary or high school through an Individualized Education Program (IEP) or a 504 plan; used Disabled Student Services on a college campus; received vocational rehabilitation services or fall under the Americans with Disabilities Act’s (ADA) definition of an individual with a disability.
How to document Schedule A eligibility?
The following documentation will need to be provided to a government agency when you apply for a Schedule A position, including:
- Disability status – This is usually in the form of a letter from your doctor or other licensed health care provider stating your disability. This letter should outline the type of disability you have (no need for a medical history) and that you are able to perform essential functions of the job, as well as any accommodations you may require.
- "Job ready" status – This is usually demonstrated through a resume and references, either verbally or in writing from someone who can outline your skills, and that you are able to perform the duties of a specific job.

Applying for position using Schedule A
You should ask for the Selective Placement or Disability Employment coordinator, or if not available the hiring or HR manager within the agency and submit your application directly. You will also want to submit your resume via the regular job posting announcement on the job boards you are using. As with any job submission, make sure you follow-up and follow all the necessary directions.
